Hi again,

My mom and dad were frugal....(so much for the eupemisms)....and lived through the great depression.

When I began the caregiver role for my dad, there were genuinely bumpy minutes regarding exaclty how things would "should" be done around the house. One morning preparing his breakfast he picked up his teabag and asked.."Where is the other tea bag?" He was asking about the one he wished to reuse a couple of times which had been sitting in a saucer on the stove since a day or two before, and which I deemed to be not the best of all items for him. He asked again in a louder voice, and this time with an accustion...."you threw it out, didn't you?" I replied that I did, and all at once he gets up from the table, proceeds to the trash bin, and fishes out his now contaminated and nasty teabag, then he turns to me and shouts..."You're a bully....you know that?" Well, I felt on the verge of tears, and as I stomped out of the kitchen (like a child because that was how he made me feel) and went over to my neighbor's house. They could see I was in a real state, so they said sit down and tell us what happened. I related the story to them, and then I stated in a huff..."If he doesn't die soon, I swear I'm gonna kill the old f--t !"....well, they started laughing at that, and then I started laughing too, and just venting with a bit of raucous humor certainly helped.

Venting and raging and raving are key to your mental and emotional survival; just make sure you are friendly and familiar with those to whom you vent. Oh, and remember to be there in a good mood for those who have put up with your little displays as well.

Who the heck knows what dark place our elders drift off to? It is a theater of the absurd....just be a good spectator.

Best wishes for you brother. Take the time you need to reconcile your thoughts and feelings and then let them come forth. My mum was in the hospital suffering a life-threatening illness so I can relate. Make sure you eat healthy, avoid unnecessary stress, and focus on your purpose here on Earth.

Thank you for your comment on my brother's blog (Home The Clock Struck One). Keeping the blog going has proven to be very helpful and a strong motivation for him. The way we manage this is via email. He writes, then his daughter or wife forward the material to me, I edit and post. A bit complicated but it works for him. Please do keep visiting and send others to the site too if possible. There's lots more to come. And yes, it is on Technorati but hasn't been given any authority and i'm not sure what that means. Re your site. I love the music. And the condition is something I have never heard of before.

May G-d continue to give us strength, so that we may be like a tree whose shade gives comfort to many. And may we be comforted when it is our time.
May G-d bless and protect the ones we love, now and always.
Amen

Oh, Frank, you were right to begin this blog. As I read your account of the changing of roles and how it happened, it reminded my of that day with my father. My older sister and I were always wondering how this would happen because our dad was such a powerhouse. He may have been a small guy in stature, but the shadow he cast over most everyone who came into his life, he was a huge man...The WWII generation was a breed all to itself. The stoic quiet, the nonverbal communications, never knowing that you were really loved...all their qualities affected our generations profoundly. I believe that you were fabulous in caring for him. Sometimes, when we are accustomed to our fathers being "Lions", it takes us off guard when they become lambs...
Keep up the good work, Frank...as my husband deals with his cancer, he needs you blog to help him to come to terms with the dark shadows that his parents in which they now live...God Bless You, Frank....
